SURVIVOR Excerpts from the book The incredible true story of American patriot, Msgt. Frank N. Lovato, Bataan Death March survivor and POW of the Japanese Written by Francisco L. Lovato December 8, 1941 (7th across the International Dateline) What a beautiful peaceful Sunday morning in paradise, I thought as I looked out at the tropical panorama of green foliage, soft blue sky and thin high clouds over Clark Airfield, Luzon, Philippines. Even though we were on full alert following the startling information earlier in the morning that Pearl Harbor had been attacked by the Japanese, the sound of birds chirping in the acacia trees made it feel like another day in paradise. Moments later… Suddenly, mirror-bright objects began falling from the bellies of the oncoming planes. Without warning the peaceful morning erupted with the high-pitched sound of bombs screaming through the air. Almost immediately, the air raid sirens signaled that we were under attack. |
